But we were always asking ourselves “How small is small?”. We did some research and found recommendations from the leading pediatrician organization in North America, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Among them is the recommendation that, to reduce the risk of choking, firm foods should be cut into bite sizes no larger than 1/2 inch in any direction for children under the age of 4, because they lack a full set of teeth. This recommendation is recognized by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). We had no idea about the existence of this guideline and nobody we knew did either. I was sent a wonderful Safe Sizer™ from Midwest Monkeys® for Emma and it is a great  plate to have around my house as sometime I rely on my older children to help out, and when it comes to cutting up Emma's food this has proven very very useful.  My older children have been able to help me out when I am busy and I like knowing that if your not sure about size then just measure it up with the handy ring that is molded right into the plate. this 1/2" diameter ring helps any one really and is a great guideline for those cutting up food for children 4 years and under. I also like that the Safe Sizer™ is BPA free and exceeds the new, tougher US government standards for phthlates and lead.
